A client may want to master a language for business, explore a particular academic discipline in depth, or develop a highly specialised interest. In these situations, the right tutor is often less like a conventional teacher and more like a mentor: someone with real expertise who can guide, challenge, and support the learning process.
At Tutors International, we are regularly asked to find a private tutor for projects that fall outside traditional schooling. We design these placements entirely around the individual, their interests, and the environment in which learning will take place.
Mentorship from real-world experts
We know that for specialist projects or niche subjects, the ideal tutor is often to be found actively working in the field.
Rather than simply teaching theory, they bring a rare practical insight and experience that enrich the learning process. The relationship becomes a partnership in which knowledge, discussion, and exploration develop naturally over time.
For example, we recently recruited a practising architect to act as tutor-mentor for a university architecture student. Alongside the student’s formal course, the architect helped review designs, discuss professional practice, and explore how architectural ideas translate into real projects.
This kind of mentorship allows students to deepen their understanding in ways that conventional study rarely allows, develop contacts in the field, and propel their early career.
Learning that fits around real life
Many specialist tutoring placements are designed to work around demanding professional schedules.
The Client was a 38 year old businessman. He had received a good education and held a senior position in a large international company. Although he was fluent in conversational Arabic he never really learned to read or write the language, and he harboured a dream to become competent enough to read and enjoy the Koran in its original language.
A very experienced academic was found to work with the Client. He escorted him as he travelled for his business. The Tutor provided lessons in the time between meetings, in the evenings and whenever else the time could be found. This arrangement lasted for a full year, after which the Client’s Arabic was at the desired standard.
Education that travels with you
Some of the most extraordinary tutoring projects take place while families are travelling.
We have recruited marine biologists to accompany families on extended sailing journeys around the world. In these placements, the tutor combines academic teaching with hands-on exploration of the environment.
Children might learn about coral ecosystems while diving on reefs, study marine conservation while observing wildlife, and continue their core curriculum alongside these experiences.
Supporting neurodiverse learners
Many children develop intense interests in particular subjects, but this is especially common among neurodiverse learners. Their passions often drive curiosity and motivation. When supported by someone with genuine expertise, those interests can become a powerful foundation for learning.
We’re often asked to recruit professional educators that also have specialist knowledge in areas such as astronomy, robotics, computer programming, marine science, languages, music, or engineering. As well as supporting the student’s core education, the tutor can nurture and develop these interests with depth and enthusiasm.
When learning is built around something a student truly cares about, we usually see remarkable academic progress.
