In a recent article, Business Insider talked to Tutors International about what life is like as a traveling tutor for the wealthiest families.
We’ve been featured in a recent Business Insider article entitled ‘Inside the lives of travel tutors for the wealthy: big paychecks, yacht trips and very little personal space’. The article, written for Business Insiders Careers section, examines the benefits of life as a tutor for UHNW families. Talking to our CEO and Founder, Adam Caller, as well as two of our tutors, the article is a balanced overview for those considering a career as a travelling tutor.
The article draws on the observations of accomplished private tutors, Joanna Dunckley and Nathaniel Hannan, who together have a combined total of 32 years experience with Tutors International.
Flexibility is a necessity
Talking to Business Insider, Nathaniel highlights how a willingness to be flexible and accommodating is an integral element of a successful travelling tutor, with Joanna discussing how lessons can be taught in a variety of locations - including superyachts and hotel rooms. She expands by emphasising that as well as a variety of localities, the needs of each student can also vary, stating ‘One family might want to travel and use the locations as inspiration for learning, and another needs their child to get into Harvard’.
Rewarding dedicated and talented individuals
Adam and Joanna also touch on the expected pay scale of a travelling tutor in the Business Insider article, explaining that the impressive salary a tutor can expect is calculated ‘to attract the absolute best out of our school system to work one-on-one with a family over several years’. With Nathaniel adding, ‘We’re basically paid like very good lawyers’.
Joanna is keen to point out that with this high salary comes a serious commitment to the role - ‘You are living their life and making yourself available for their life.’
Finding the right tutor and forming family ties
One aspect of travel tutoring the article also highlighted, which is fundamental to the Tutors International success, is its rigorous recruitment process. Joanna discusses how essential matching the right candidate with the right family is, as the role stretches far beyond a normal school day:
‘You’re not just showing up, teaching for a few hours [...] you’re spending time with them at airports and dragging their bags through high-stress situations’.
The benefit of having such a rigorous matching process means that these close knit working environments often result in strong, long-lasting bonds with students and their families. Nathaniel illustrates this by saying, ‘The relationship we develop with these families lasts many years after we finish tutoring their child.'
Tutors International tutors are regularly paid upward of £200,000, due to the need to secure candidates with outstanding academic qualifications and personal qualities to match the very specific demands of each UHNW family. We are currently recruiting for private tutors in global locations.
