Super-Tutors are Paid $400,000 Because it’s a Really Hard Job

So called super-tutors are worth their extraordinarily high salaries because the contracts are so demanding.

We place full-time private tutors with high-earning families around the world on short- and long-term contracts. Salaries of $400,000 per year, plus 4 annual flights home, accommodation, and use of a car is not unheard of. These kinds of elite tutors have been dubbed super-tutors by the media, but to us, they're just Tutors International tutors.

Our founder, Adam Caller, was once quoted as saying:

“It’s a lot of money but it was a full-on job, working every weekday evening, often till midnight, and a lot of weekends… It’s quite isolating too and there are only certain people who can cope with that.”

At Tutors International, we don’t have tutors ‘on our books’ like others do but recruit for each new post individually, employing highly qualified teachers who fit the exacting criteria to offer an interview. Our tutors are employed directly by us, and we support them and the family closely through the duration of the placement.

Tutors International tutors are regularly paid upwards of £180,000 ($230,000 USD) per year, mainly because of their extremely high qualifications, but also because of the unique and demanding requirements of the roles.

Success in private tutoring depends a great deal on the relationship between the tutor, the student, and the family, so it’s very important that everyone can live and work together comfortably. Tutors are not recruited on their academic abilities alone, but on personality, hobbies and interests, ethics and culture – to ensure a perfect fit with the family.

In this example from a current Tutors International job advert, the candidate must:

  • Be a native English speaker with proficiency in French, Italian, and German.
  • Must be flexible, patient, and able to integrate into a dynamic, travel-heavy lifestyle that includes extensive travel across Europe, the US, and the Middle East.
  • Be adaptable to teaching in diverse settings, including hotels, and must be able to provide a fun, engaging, and varied educational experience.
  • Have fluency in traditional teaching methods and modern educational tools, along with fitness and good health due to the active lifestyle of the family.
  • Have a passion for outdoor activities, possibly have music training, and comfort with horses is highly desirable.

Ever-changing environments

One of our tutors was profiled in a Guardian article. Stephen (not his real name), a tutor with 16 years of experience working with wealthy families, shared his journey from teaching on a yacht traveling from Mallorca to Australia, integrating real-world experiences like spotting dolphins into his lessons. His role required "dynamic flexibility," adapting to ever-changing environments and circumstances. Tutors in such positions must see textbooks as "launchpads but not limits," using creativity to keep learning alive despite travel and sudden changes in plans.

Our tutors also need to be self-sufficient, managing without traditional support systems like a board of governors or headteachers. They send regular reports to us, ensuring the relationship remains on track and the quality of education is upheld. The commitment required extends beyond teaching, impacting their private lives, as these roles often lack the structure and support many people take for granted.

Exceptional candidates are  expensive

Such scarcity of suitable applicants – and often just two candidates are presented to the family at the final stage of the lengthy interview process – comes at a cost. Super-tutors are expensive.

“Parents are more than happy to pay a premium for the sake of their child’s education. Getting that perfect, the one that inspires learning, turns grades around, encourages deeper thought and greater insight, who travels with the family, plays tennis, helps them all learn a new language and culture if they are relocating – finding that person is worth every penny.”
