We’ve seen firsthand the increasing pressures faced by university students. Increasingly, students are turning to specialist tutors to help support their college or university studies.
At Tutors International, we're at the head of the growing demand for university tutors, providing bespoke support in any discipline that not only results in academic success but fosters crucial independent learning skills - vital for lifelong career success.
Why is there a growing demand for university tutoring?
There's been a noticeable rise in university students seeking private tuition. This surge is driven by several factors, including a lack of learning support, poor teaching, institutional challenges, and learning difficulties.
Many students feel they don't receive adequate support from their universities, prompting them to seek additional help during their university years to get them back on track and ensure a good academic outcome.
Both undergraduates and postgraduates seek private tuition from outside the college for the same reasons that students and families seek private tutoring at school age, such as:
- Bullying and marginalisation in the classroom,
- Learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, or dyscalculia,
- Behavioural problems that cause them to fall behind in class,
- Lack of academic support from teachers or the school,
- Circumstances that mean a child has missed school and needs to catch up,
- Extra help in a difficult subject to ensure the student has understood it.
Adam Caller believes the rise in enquiries for university support from private tutors is largely down to the lack of academic support from the universities themselves.
"The calibre of graduates that universities turn out is, in my opinion, lower than ever before. Students have told me that they receive as little as six hours of teaching per week, which may sound great in the first year, but in their final year this is causing them concern! They thought their lecturers would teach them all about their chosen subject, but that’s rarely the case. So students are looking for expert tutors to help them master the whole subject."
Additionally, there are some students being pushed into degrees that their parents would like them to take, but for which the student demonstrates little enthusiasm or talent:
“When the student struggles or falls behind because the subject just isn’t interesting to them - for example, a business degree the parents have encouraged the child to take to prepare them for taking over the family business - a private tutor find ways to engage the student, ensure they’ve mastered each concept before moving on, and dedicate time to applying the knowledge to real, practical situations that aid learning."
Providing personalised support for university students
Our university tutors provide personalised academic support and mentorship tailored to each student's unique needs, as well as pastoral support. It’s assumed that everyone can already manage adult life and their own academic challenges if they get to university - but sometimes students need extra help.
Here’s an example of a university tutor role we’re recruiting for:
- Providing academic support and mentorship to a female undergraduate student studying architecture. The tutor assists with academic inquiries, coursework challenges, and exam preparation, as well as facilitating wider architectural education and internship opportunities.
Developing independent learning skills is crucial
Our philosophy at Tutors International is clear: we're here to help students be the best they can be, not to do the work for them.
Our CEO, Adam Caller, emphasises this point:
"The goal isn't to spoon-feed information. We're here to guide students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. This approach ensures they are well-prepared to tackle future challenges confidently and independently."
For university students, developing independent learning skills is essential. It prepares them for the self-directed nature of higher education and their future careers. By providing the right tools and strategies, we help build their confidence and encourage them to take control of their own learning journey.
We’re committed to ethical tutoring practices
Maintaining academic integrity is a top priority for us. Adam has previously highlighted a situation where we had to withdraw a job listing due to concerns about the level of academic support potentially breaching university policies.
"We decided to pull back because it was important to uphold the integrity of the education process. If a student is at school or university, our aim with supporting private tuition is to complement those other educational streams."
The rising demand for university tutoring highlights the need for specialist, high-quality educational support. At Tutors International, we're committed to providing tailored support that means students are well-equipped for both academic success and their future professional lives.
