Tutors International, the world’s leading provider of full time private tuition, today reported that more university students than ever are seeking extra support from private tutors to help them complete their degrees.
Private tuition is not just for school children. Tutors International, founded in 1999 by Adam Caller, today reported that the number of enquiries for private tuition by university students has never been higher.
Mr Caller said, “There are a number of reasons for the increase in university students seeking extra tuition. Some of those reasons include poor standards of teaching; some include institutional bullying by colleges that are not accountable to anyone else. Other reasons are that students suffer learning difficulties, and some just feel they need that extra push in their final year…”
Both undergraduates and postgraduates seek private tuition from outside the college for the same reasons that students and families seek private tutoring at school-age, such as:
- Bullying and marginalisation in the classroom,
- Learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or dyscalculia,
- Behavioural problems that cause them to fall behind in class,
- Lack of academic support from teachers or the school,
- Circumstances that mean a child has missed schools and needs to catch up,
- Extra help in a difficult subject to ensure the student has understood it.
Could the rise in enquiries for university course support from private tutors be inherently down to the lack of academic support from the university itself?
Mr Caller believes that is likely: “The calibre of graduates that universities turn out is, in my opinion, lower than ever before. Is it coincidence that students are also seeking extra help to finish their degrees? I don’t think it is. Students have told me that they receive as little as six hours of teaching per week, which may sound great in the first year, but in their final year this is causing even them concern! They thought their lecturers would teach them all about their chosen subject, but that’s rarely the case. So students are looking for expert tutors to help them master the whole subject.”
There are some students that are being pushed into degrees that their parents would like them to take, but that the student demonstrates little enthusiasm or talent for:
“Business degrees, typically, are those that parents have required their son or daughter to take, with the expectation that the child will join the family business and one day, take over the reins. So when the student struggles or falls behind because the subject just isn’t that interesting to them, a private tutor can help to find ways that engage the student, ensure they’ve grasped each concept before moving on to the next one, and dedicate one-to-one time to applying the knowledge to real, practical situations that aid learning.”
