Private tutors are now being employed by expat families to prepare their children for schools in foreign countries, according to leading private tuition agency, Tutors International.
British and US expat families are turning to private tutoring organisations like Tutors International to prepare children for school in their destination country.
Adam Caller, founder of the Oxford-based private tuition agency and a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, today reported a rise in the number of enquiries for private tuition from families intending to place their children in school in another country, but feel they would benefit from a full-time private tutor before enrollment.
All countries have varying degrees of educational standards and teaching styles, and it’s not always a straightforward transition from one country’s curriculum to another. Tutors International are well aware of the problems encountered when enrolling pupils in foreign schools: “Expat children often have trouble settling into a foreign school, depending largely on their age,” says Mr Caller. “While kids up to the age of about nine find the transition fairly easy, and pick up the language, customs, and teaching style quite quickly, older pupils often find it harder to adjust, and their behaviour and grades can be affected.”
Education consultants can provide useful information for expat families about schools in their destination country, but private tuition is often overlooked. Tutors International have been finding specialist private tutors for expat families since 1999, but it is usually full-time home schooling. “We’re starting to see a rise in the enquiries from families who want to employ a full-time private tutor for a few months to ease the transition from the home country’s school to the new one,” explained Mr Caller. “The tutor can teach them the language, introduce cultural differences, blend the new curriculum with the old, and bring the student up to the standards required of them at their new school – either while still in their home country or at their new home.”
