European Parents Dissatisfied with School Education Turn to Private Tuition to Enable Children to Compete for University Places Overseas

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

Leading private tuition provider, Tutors International, has reported a significant rise in the number of tutoring enquiries from families in mainland Europe who are “dissatisfied with the breadth of education in schools.”

More families in continental Europe are seeking the services of private tutors because of widespread dissatisfaction with standards in school education and the need to compete in the global knowledge economy, according to a statement published by Tutors International today.

Adam Caller, who founded Tutors International in 1999, said of the rise, “The majority of enquiries we’ve received have been from parents who are just not happy with the standard of education in school. They want their children to go to Oxford University or Harvard, and to compete with kids in the UK, the US and in other countries, those kids need that extra ‘sparkle’ – that added ‘something’ that puts them ahead of the majority of their peers.”

Until now, Tutors International say, most of the enquiries for both after-school tuition and full-time home schooling have come from counties such as the US, and in Europe, from the UK and Switzerland. Now they report tutoring requests from Kazakhstan, Spain and Greece, among others.

Tutors International, described by the UK’s prestigious Good Schools Guide as ‘the Dom Perignon rather than the Cava end of the [private tutoring] market’ employ specialised, hand-picked private tutors, often earning around £60,000 ($90,000) a year for a full-time private tuition contract, so it is significant that these countries are emerging into the high-end private tutor market.

A premium has been placed on contextual learning – one that parents are willing to pay to secure a better education for their children. Schools are increasingly under pressure to manage budgets, larger class sizes, achieve higher exam grades, and please stakeholders, and parents feel that those pressures leave students lacking.

Mr Caller said, “Parents want their kids to know what’s going on in the world. They want applied learning and cross-discipline understanding. They don't want to just achieve an A in History; they want to understand historical politics too. Good exam results should be a by-product of good learning and good teaching. Private tutoring has a different teaching ethos than that found in all but the best private schools. A private tutor can take the time to explain the world and educate a child holistically, one to one, in a fun and engaging way that inspires a real joy and love of learning. Parents in all countries are starting to recognise this and want their children to benefit from home schooling too.”
