In a statement published today, leading provider of private tuition, Tutors International, acknowledge the unique benefits of home schooling with a private tutor over a school-based education.
Adam Caller, who founded Tutors International in 1999, published a statement today that expounds the benefits of private tuition over school-based education.
“A school teacher has a class of around 25 to 30 students – when that teacher is placed one on one with a student, you suddenly get a whole different sort of education,” Mr Caller said.
“With so much time dedicated to teaching, you can either accelerate the curriculum - learning things quicker, taking exams earlier, going to university earlier… or you can broaden it and teach a whole range of new subjects, explore subjects in more depth, teach a concept holistically - which, in my opinion, is the most significant benefit of private tuition.”
There are some people who criticise home schooling as failing to deliver the social aspects of a school-based education. But Mr Caller refutes this argument:
“When people talk about ‘social’ aspects of schooling, what they mean invariably involves the bullying, the peer pressure, the fear and the worry that comes with working alongside other children in that sort of environment. Homeschooling takes away the niggling competitiveness in the classroom and allows the student to flourish within safe, encouraging surroundings, and the pace and depth of study allows for more free time for hobbies, sports, social events and other more pleasant activities that take the place of an intimidating school culture.”
Tutors International are frequently asked by parents to devise lesson plans that span disciplines, cultures, socio-economic and even continental boundaries. One such example is that of a family who want their children to understand more about where their t-shirts come from:
“If you imagine a similar lesson in school, you might learn in Geography about the location of cotton fields and talk about the process of picking cotton and making dyes... … But with private tutoring, this lesson can become something very different. This family wanted their children to experience the whole process – flying to the US to pick the cotton, carding the yarn, making dyes from natural sources, dying and fixing the yarn colour, building a small loom and weaving the cloth, then designing a pattern and hand-sewing the shirt - so that we’re not talking about simply an academic exercise here, but a deeper understanding of the process at every level. Those children will grow up with a unique set of skills, preparing them for roles in leadership or government. In this regard, there are endless benefits of home schooling.”
