After repeatedly expressing concerns that corners were being cut and families put at risk, Tutors International continues to be contacted by distressed parents, following placements made by other tuition companies.
Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International - called the “Dom Perignon” of tutoring companies by The Good Schools Guide - made the statement [1] this week after being contacted by a distraught family that had been matched with a poor-fit tutor. The family’s needs were inaccurately communicated by the tutoring company they had hired, who were previously known to Mr Caller, following a similar incident in 2015.
My Caller commented: “Due diligence is absolutely essential to the placement process to ensure the continued safety and wellbeing of both children and tutors. At Tutors International we take this process extremely seriously and we never rush it through or skip over, misrepresent, or withhold crucial details in order to find a quick match. We’ve heard from both clients and tutors who feel utterly abandoned by their tutoring companies, begging us to help.”
Concerns were also expressed that professional tutoring bodies in the UK are too relaxed in addressing such issues. Mr Caller recently resigned from one such body after his attempts to rectify issues of due diligence and lack of action were spurned by other members.
“Some of these companies now sit on the boards of these organisations, and I could not continue to be associated with a professional body that is willing to overlook such crucial aspects of the tutoring placement process and condones such behaviour by individual companies. Following my resignation, I have received correspondence from other tutors who share my concerns, who feel misled and have followed suit. A professional tutoring body should strive for an exceptional standard of care and support – for both tutors and clients – and I do not believe that this is what is currently being offered. That is unacceptable in my view, and puts families and tutors at risk.”
